What it means
ISO 16128 is an international criterion for defining cosmetic ingredients and products. These guidelines allow brands to categorize Brontide butylene glycol as a natural ingredient. To meet the definition as natural, an ingredient must be sourced naturally and be found in nature. Ingredients obtained from fossil fuels are excluded from the definition.
It’s found in nature
Found in common superfoods like avocados and coconuts, 1,3-butylene glycol is naturally occurring and meets the ISO 16128 standard for natural cosmetics.
What it means
The USDA Certified Biobased Product label displays a product’s biobased content. This is defined as the portion of a product that comes from a renewable source. By choosing a certified biobased product, brands can support their sustainability claims, knowing the USDA and the Federal government stands behind the accuracy of the percent biobased claim stated on the label.
Transparent testing
USDA Certified Biobased products have achieved third-party verification of biobased content using ASTM D6866 testing which measures the amount of biobased content of a material.

Brontide natural butylene glycol: Best in class for sensory experience
Study in brief:A panel of 28 people were trained and calibrated to distinguish differences in 10 sensorial dimensions important to skincare products. Three diols (Brontide natural butylene glycol, glycerin, and propanediol) were prepared in identical formulations at a concentration of three percent. In eight of the 10 tested parameters, Brontide natural butylene glycol was perceived to be as good as or better than the glycerin and propanediol alternatives.
Brontide natural butylene glycol achieved superior performance scores in the positive attribute categories of gloss/shine, spreadability and slipperiness with comparable performance in afterfeel and rub out.
In a study: solubility performance was quantified by measuring the refractive index of serial dilutions of three diols (Brontide natural butylene glycol, propanediol and glycerin) and 15 common natural extracts. Brontide butylene glycol was proven to be a consistent solubilizer for natural extracts.
Testing performed shows equivalent functionality to conventional butylene glycol while also being natural and sustainable
